Sustainable Yacht Charter — Eco-Friendly Cruising on the French Riviera

Luxury and sustainability are no longer opposites — especially on the French Riviera. As the Mediterranean's marine ecosystems face growing pressure, the yacht charter industry is evolving with innovative practices that protect the very beauty that draws us to the sea.

How We Practice Sustainable Chartering

  • Anchoring protocols — We never anchor on Posidonia seagrass meadows, using designated eco-mooring buoys instead
  • Waste management — Zero single-use plastics aboard. Reusable water bottles and separated recycling
  • Biodegradable products — All cleaning products and sunscreens provided aboard are marine-safe
  • Fuel efficiency — Optimised routes and speeds to minimise fuel consumption
  • Local sourcing — Catering uses locally sourced, seasonal ingredients from Provençal markets

Posidonia Protection on the French Riviera

Since 2021, anchoring on Posidonia meadows in French waters is prohibited, with fines up to €150,000. All our captains are trained in Posidonia-safe anchoring, using satellite mapping to identify sand patches and eco-mooring buoys.

Eco-Friendly Itinerary: The Marine Conservation Route

Our most popular sustainable itinerary runs from Cannes to the Lérins Islands. Sail to Sainte-Marguerite on eco-mooring buoys. Guided snorkeling over Posidonia meadows with crew narration. Visit Saint-Honorat monastery and its organic vineyard. Return via the Esterel coast with minimal fuel consumption.

The Future of Sustainable Yachting

The yacht industry is investing heavily in hybrid and electric propulsion, solar panels, and hydrogen fuel cells. At Navélia, we're committed to expanding our sustainable fleet and practices — because the Mediterranean's beauty is worth protecting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are yacht charters bad for the environment?+

Modern yachts are far more efficient than they were a decade ago. Many of our fleet use low-emission engines, biodegradable products, and follow strict anchoring protocols.

What is Posidonia and why is it important?+

Posidonia oceanica is a seagrass endemic to the Mediterranean. It produces oxygen, sequesters carbon, and provides habitat for hundreds of marine species. French law prohibits anchoring on Posidonia meadows.
