The French Riviera's Best-Kept Secrets
Most visitors to the French Riviera see the famous ports — Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Monaco. But the Côte d'Azur's true magic lies in its hidden anchorages: secluded bays surrounded by pine-covered cliffs, accessible only from the sea.
A yacht charter gives you exclusive access to these secret spots. Here are our favourite quiet coves, curated from years of local knowledge.
Near Saint-Tropez
Cap Taillat
A narrow sandy peninsula with crystal water on both sides. Anchor on the north side for shelter from the Mistral, or the south for afternoon sun. No roads, no buildings — just nature.
Calanque de l'Escalet
A tiny rocky inlet east of Ramatuelle with extraordinary water clarity. Drop anchor and snorkel among the granite formations. Best in morning light when the turquoise colour is most vivid.
Baie de Briande
On the south side of the Saint-Tropez peninsula, this wide bay with a sandy bottom is perfect for overnight anchoring. The surrounding National Park ensures zero development.
Near Cannes
Île Saint-Honorat
The quieter of the two Lérins Islands, home to a working Cistercian monastery that produces wines you can taste on the island. Anchor on the south side for a tranquil lunch in turquoise water.
Calanques de l'Esterel
West of Cannes, the volcanic red rocks of the Esterel Massif plunge into deep blue water, creating dozens of tiny calanques. The contrast of red rock and blue sea is extraordinary.
Near Monaco & Nice
Anse de la Scaletta (Cap Ferrat)
On the east side of the Cap Ferrat peninsula, this small bay is sheltered from westerly winds. The rocky seabed offers excellent snorkelling, and the surrounding villa gardens create a lush backdrop.
Baie de Villefranche (deep anchorage)
While Villefranche-sur-Mer's bay is well known, the deep-water anchorage at its eastern end, below the citadel, offers surprising seclusion. Morning light here is photographer's gold.
The Porquerolles Secret
Porquerolles deserves special mention. This island near Hyères has Caribbean-like beaches with no development behind them. The Plage de Notre-Dame and Plage de la Courtade offer some of the Mediterranean's finest swimming.
Tips for Finding Quiet Anchorages
- Arrive early: The best anchorages fill by 11am in peak season. Depart at dawn for first pick
- Mid-week is best: Weekends bring local boats. Tuesday–Thursday offers the most privacy
- September is golden: Warm water, fewer boats, longer golden-hour light
- Trust your captain: Experienced local captains know spots not on any map
- Respect marine parks: Some areas restrict anchoring to protect Posidonia seagrass

Frequently Asked Questions
Are hidden coves safe for anchoring overnight?+
Many are excellent overnight anchorages when weather conditions are right. Your captain will assess wind, swell, and seabed conditions to choose the safest spots. In unsettled weather, nearby marinas offer backup.
Can I access these coves on a day charter?+
Yes. A day charter from Saint-Tropez or Cannes can reach several of these spots. For the full 'hidden coves' experience, we recommend a 3–5 day charter to explore at a relaxed pace.
Will we have the coves to ourselves?+
In shoulder season (May–June, September–October), you'll often be completely alone. In July–August, early mornings and weekdays offer the best chance of privacy. Your captain knows when and where to go.
